LATER compounds are based on PBT, one of the main linear polyesters most used by moulders (PET is the other one), obtained by polycondensation of terephtalic acid and butanediol. Because many properties of PBT are similar to PA (both 6 and 66), often the three resins share the same markets. However, there are also many differences between the three polymers.

Main properties

  • Good mechanical, thermal and electrical properties;
  • Good chemical resistance;
  • Low moisture absorption;
  • Very good wear resistance.
LATER compounds show good wear and chemical resistance, and low moisture absorption (compared to PA). These properties allow use of LATER in parts working in very humid environment or in water where significant losses in mechanical resistance and dimensional stability are not accepted. However, products should not be used in continuous or long contact with hot water (above 50°C), because of poor hydrolysis resistance of base resin.

Compounds can be UV and weather stabilized.

Impact resistance grades
Impact resistant versions are able to provide better toughness of the moulded part. Products are available both in reinforced and in flame retardant versions.

Filled grades
LATER can be filled with mineral filler or with a mix of fibrous/non-fibrous fillers, in order to obtain stiffer products with higher dimensional stability and tight tolerances but without particular requirements of impact resistance.

Reinforced grades
LATER can be reinforced with glass or carbon fibre, which improve material stiffness. Presence of fibrous fillers requires a particular care of design to reduce differential shrinkage and part warpage. Excellent is the thermal stability: the continuous use temperature without load can be up to 140-150°C (180°C per short period of time).

Flame-retardant grades
Flame retardant versions are normally achieved with a better thermal stabilization that ensures a good behaviour of the material while working under load at high temperature. Suitable flame-retardants additives can be provided with halogens or without halogens depending on the specific project requirements.

Self-lubricant grades
Family products with better self-lubricating properties are available by adding substances able to improve the tribological properties of the material. These grades are suitable for plastic-metal or plastic-plastic contact applications. Compounds able to fulfil specific requirements concerning wear resistance and friction factor can also be formulated. For more information, please check LATILUB grades.

Electrically partially conductive / dissipative grades
Family compounds can be formulated with partially conductive or dissipative properties, even in reinforced versions and/or with carbon nanotubes: search grades in LATIOHM product range.

E.M.I. shielding grades

Density-controlled grades
Substitution of materials those are heavy but toxic (e.g. lead) or lighter than common plastic, means special compounds have to be formulated. Density of these grades can be very different than the base resin. See LATIMASS family for further information.
