SELF-LUBRICANT GRADES

LATILUB compounds are based on different base resins and are used to obtain parts able to slide each other, as bushings, gears, cams, slides.

Plastics materials are substituting metals in applications where sliding of parts with low friction and wear resistance is the most important requirement, and process ability, economicity, lightness and mechanical performances are other important properties.
The reference properties, as friction coefficient, wear factor, PV limit cannot be clearly defined as other physical properties. A lot of involved parameters as surface hardness, applied loads, sliding speed, type of mating surface and mating surface finishing, can have opposite, and often non-linear, effects. Therefore, data must be considered as simply indicative and useful just for a rough selection, while the effective use of the material has to be verified in the practice.

Most common additives used to improve the self-lubricating properties of thermoplastics are:

  • PTFE: it is a material with the lows friction coefficients. Additive content is accurately balanced in order to avoid abnormal wear;
  • Silicone: this kind of material migrates on part surface, overall at high sliding speed, allowing a continuous lubricating layer between mating surfaces;
  • Molybdenum disulphide: its self-lubricating property is not as clearly visible as in case of PTFE. Additive content is low in order to avoid mechanical performances reduction;
  • Graphite: it is added in high percentage. It improves the dimensional stability (depending on percentage used). It is successfully used in applications in contact with water;
  • Aramid fibres: they are used in high percentage to improve the wear resistance.
PTFE/Silicone mix is much more effective than adding a single component.

Filled grades
Mineral filled versions were formulated, in order to obtain stiff, high dimensional stability products without peculiar needs of impact resistance. Glass beads versions are also available.

Reinforced grades
LATILUB family products can be glass and/or carbon reinforced, in order to improve material stiffness. Presence of fibrous fillers requires a particular care of design to reduce differential shrinkage and part warpage.

Flame retardant grades
Flame retardant versions were formulated by adding red phosphorous-based flame retardant additives.
